SME Clinic, on behalf of its client, a leading international transport and logistics company, invites applications from suitably qualified, experienced, and results-driven professionals for the position of Human Resources Officer. The company seeks an experienced individual to ensure that its people processes support safe, efficient and compliant operations. The role will be based in Blantyre and will work closely with management teams to retain and develop talent, oversee HR administration and maintain compliance with labour laws.

Responsibilities or duties

  • Develop and implement HR systems and policies: Support the development and rollout of HR initiatives and systems; ensure policies are up to date and communicated to staff.
  • Talent acquisition and onboarding: Prepare job descriptions, advertise vacancies and coordinate the recruitment process; lead new‑hire orientations and create effective onboarding plans.
  • Training and development: Develop and deliver training programmes and career‑development activities to upskill drivers, warehouse staff and administrative personnel.
  • Performance management: Assist managers in implementing performance appraisal processes and support coaching, disciplinary and grievance procedures.
  • HR records and payroll support: Maintain accurate physical and digital employee records; update internal databases with new‑hire information; gather payroll data such as working days and bank details; assist with administering pay and benefits.
  • Employee relations and wellbeing: Provide counselling on HR policies and procedures; respond to employee queries about benefits and leave; promote a healthy and inclusive workplace.
  • Compliance and risk management: Ensure adherence to labour laws, health and safety standards and regulatory requirements; review employment conditions and working environments to ensure legal compliance.
  • Workforce planning and retention: Support managers in forecasting staffing needs and managing seasonal workforce peaks; help identify and retain key talent.
  • Reporting: Prepare HR‑related reports and presentations (e.g., headcount, turnover and training metrics) and provide data to support strategic decisions.

Qualifications or requirements (e.g., education, skills)

Experience needed

  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Resource Management, Business Administration, Social Sciences or a related field.
  • Minimum of 3–5 years’ experience in an HR or administration role, preferably within the transport/logistics sector.
  • Proven knowledge of HR functions such as recruitment, payroll, training and performance management.
  • Good understanding of labour laws and disciplinary procedures; familiarity with Malawi Employment Act and labour legislation is highly desirable.
  • Proficiency in MS Office and strong organisational and time‑management abilities.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills; ability to build effective working relationships at all levels and to counsel staff when needed.
  • High ethical standards, confidentiality and reliability; proactive problem‑solver with good decision‑making aptitude.
