Job Overview

The Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources (LUANAR) invites applications from suitably qualified candidates to join the Faculty of Agriculture as Professor, Associate Professor, Senior Lecturer, Lecturer, Assistant Lecturer, or Staff Associate in Animal Science.

The successful candidate will contribute to excellence in teaching, research, consultancy, curriculum development, community engagement, and student mentorship in the field of Animal Science. The role also includes conducting impactful research, securing research funding, and supporting the University's mission of advancing agricultural education and innovation.

Key Responsibilities

Teaching and Learning

  • Develop and deliver undergraduate and postgraduate courses in Animal Science.
  • Prepare and update course outlines, lesson plans, and instructional materials.
  • Conduct lectures, tutorials, practical sessions, seminars, and field-based learning activities.
  • Assess student performance through assignments, examinations, practical assessments, and research projects.

Curriculum Development

  • Review and enhance academic programmes to align with current scientific developments and industry needs.
  • Incorporate innovative teaching approaches and emerging technologies into the curriculum.

Research and Scholarship

  • Conduct original research in Animal Science and related disciplines.
  • Publish research findings in reputable peer-reviewed journals.
  • Present research at academic conferences and professional forums.
  • Supervise undergraduate and postgraduate student research projects, theses, and dissertations.
  • Develop grant proposals and secure funding for research and consultancy activities.

Student Mentorship

  • Provide academic advising and career guidance.
  • Mentor students in their academic, research, and professional development.

Community Engagement

  • Participate in outreach programmes that support livestock development and agricultural communities.
  • Deliver professional training, workshops, and consultancy services where appropriate.

Quality Assurance

  • Participate in academic quality assurance and programme review activities.
  • Ensure compliance with institutional policies and accreditation standards.

Administrative Responsibilities

  • Serve on departmental, faculty, and university committees.
  • Contribute to departmental planning and academic administration.
  • Perform any other duties assigned by the University.

Qualifications

Applicants should possess:

  • A Master's degree in Animal Science with a major in Animal Breeding or Livestock Production from a recognized university for appointment at the Assistant Lecturer level.
  • A PhD in Animal Science from a recognized university for appointment at the Lecturer level and above.

Other Requirements

  • Applicants for Staff Associate positions must possess a Bachelor's degree in a closely related field with at least a Credit from a reputable university.
  • Candidates completing a Master's degree should indicate their expected completion date.
  • A minimum of three (3) years' relevant experience, preferably in university teaching or curriculum development.
  • Applicants for Senior Lecturer, Associate Professor, and Professor positions must demonstrate publications in recognized peer-reviewed journals and evidence of attracting research funding.

Terms and Conditions

Successful candidates will be appointed on an initial two-year contract, with the possibility of permanent appointment subject to satisfactory performance and compliance with the LUANAR Staff Regulations and Conditions of Service (2023).

Remuneration will be in accordance with the University's Staff Regulations and Conditions of Service.
