JOB DETAILS:

ABOUT THE ROLE

FAO Malawi is seeking a Programme Officer (Animal Health) to coordinate and implement livestock and animal health initiatives, including FAO's component of the newly approved Pandemic Fund project—"Strengthening Pandemic Prevention, Preparedness and Response through the One Health Approach in Malawi (SP3ROHAM)."

The project (August 2026–2029) focuses on:

• Surveillance and early warning systems
• Laboratory systems strengthening
• Capacity development for One Health emergencies

You will work with the Department of Animal Health and Livestock Development (DAHLD), WHO, UNICEF, World Bank, and other key partners. This role directly contributes to Malawi's national systems for preventing, detecting, and responding to epidemic and pandemic threats.

KEY REQUIREMENTS

Minimum Qualifications:

• Advanced University degree (Master's or equivalent) in Veterinary Medicine or related field
• 5 years of relevant experience managing animal disease control programmes (preferably in developing countries), including leading teams and partnerships
• Working proficiency (Level C) in English AND intermediate knowledge (Level B) of another FAO official language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, or Spanish)

Competencies:

Desirable:

• Field experience in multiple locations
• Experience in technical cooperation, policy analysis, and multidisciplinary teams

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

• Lead and supervise implementation of animal health and livestock development projects, including the Pandemic Fund project
• Guide project personnel and partners on surveillance, laboratory systems, and capacity development
• Develop and oversee project workplans ensuring timely delivery and compliance
• Coordinate with government counterparts, implementing entities, and delivery partners
• Monitor project budgets and resources per organizational and donor requirements
• Design and deliver training, capacity development, and knowledge-sharing activities
• Promote One Health collaboration at national and regional levels
• Prepare technical, operational, and progress reports
• Organize missions, workshops, meetings, and evaluation activities
• Provide technical advice on transboundary animal diseases (TADs), zoonoses, and antimicrobial resistance (AMR)
