Safeguarding Leadership & Operations
- Support the management team to create environment that demonstrates high commitment to safeguarding issues and project participants.
- Support management in developing and implementing safeguarding measures and procedures.
- Facilitate the process of developing internal promotion and socialisation of the safeguarding policy and management standards among staff, key stakeholders, and partners.
- Take lead in annual reviews of implementation and adherence to management safeguarding standards and make recommendation for remedial actions.
- Support Human Resources function in ensuring recruitment processes minimise risk of engaging candidates that are unsuitable to work with young people and communities.
Case management
- Provide support to ensure a strong safeguarding feedback mechanism is in place and meets the needs of project participants.
- Ensure that all staff, volunteers, contractors and partners understand the Safeguarding policy, Code of Conduct, and are aware of expected behaviours and implications of misconduct.
- Ensure that vetted referral pathways (internal and external) are included in the project management cycle.
- Participate and facilitate incident reporting, investigations, and case closure, ensuring that responses to incidents are prioritised for the best interests of project participants.
- Compile regular reports and analyse trends from evidence-based learning over time to ensure that the safeguarding actions are strengthened.
- Maintain proper documentation of all reports and the case handling process.
Programming and Influencing
- Participate in proposal development to ensure safeguarding activities are incorporated with clear deliverables, indicators, timeframes, and adequate budgets.
- Facilitate strategy development and reviews for use and adherence to ensure that safeguarding tools and standards are in inculcated in all programming, influencing, communications, & media interventions.
- Develop quality controls e.g. checklists and field visits to monitor how strong mainstreaming of safeguarding issues across all stages of project cycle management.
- Support project data collection for reviews, evaluations, and annual planning and reporting.
Capacity Building and External Stakeholders
- Develop local training packages, new staff orientations, and training plans annually on safeguarding.
- Lead internal trainings and refresher activities and maintain regular engagement with staff, partners, stakeholders and project participants.
- Build and maintain relationships with service providers ensuring that the organisation has the right network of support on safeguarding.
- Conduct due diligence for partners, contractors, and other key stakeholders and provide awareness raising on the safeguarding policy and procedures.
- Hold learning and review meetings for all safeguarding focal point persons and key project staff.
- Prepare and present briefing notes on safeguarding for project stakeholders during events.
- Lead the safeguarding information management within FAWE Malawi
Risk Management, Equality and Inclusion
- Support project teams to assess safeguarding risks from planned delivery of activities and events to minimise risks to project participants in all their diversity
- Support the formulation of risk management strategies for safeguarding to ensure they are integral to all project systems and processes.
- Work with all staff to ensure all types of project engagement are inclusive of project participants in all their diversity and prioritise their best interest and safety.
- Promote staff behaviour towards young people to be respectful, non-discriminatory and appropriate.
- Support socialisation of Social Inclusion within the FAWE Malawi and response including capacity building initiatives and with project leadership teams.
Qualifications, Experience and Competencies.
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in Social Science, Human Rights, Development Studies, Gender Studies, or related field.
- At least 5 years of progressive work experience in NGO setup or Development or Humanitarian contexts addressing sexual exploitation and abuse, sexual harassment, sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV).
- Proven track record of extensive experience in safeguarding and protecting vulnerable people.
- Experience working directly in gender, age, disability or social inclusion programming related issues and/or broader protection issues, preferably in an NGO context.
- Experience in interactive and/or innovative training approaches and conducting successful workshops.
- Experience in community facilitation, sensitisation and awareness raising is desirable.
- Demonstrated knowledge in PSHEA and case management is preferred.
- Applicants with experience working with scholarship programs are particularly preferred.
Skills & Knowledge
- Demonstrated fluency in critical concepts of advising, assessing, designing or managing programmes or efforts related to vulnerability, gender, age, disability, refugees, social inclusion in development contexts and ability to develop program strategies and guidance.
- Knowledge of inclusive gender analysis and assessments, including approaches, methods, and frameworks
- Familiarity with data protection and confidentiality measures.
- An understanding of young people participation and participatory techniques
- Familiarity with hard-to-reach areas of Malawi, local culture, language, logistics and practices.
- Ability to work in a team of professionals.
- Ability to communicate effectively in English.
- Excellent verbal and written communications skills.
- Strong analytical skills and the ability to quickly adapt technical guidance to any given operating environment.
- High computer literacy with full knowledge of Microsoft Office applications.
