Truck Mechanic / Heavy Vehicle Mechanic

Job Purpose

To inspect, diagnose, repair, service and overhaul heavy commercial vehicles to ensure maximum fleet reliability, safety and operational efficiency.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Conduct inspections and diagnose mechanical faults on trucks.
  • Service and repair heavy-vehicle engines.
  • Perform engine overhauls and component replacements.
  • Diagnose and repair transmission and drivetrain systems.
  • Maintain clutches, differentials, axles and driveline components.
  • Inspect and repair braking and suspension systems.
  • Conduct preventive and corrective maintenance.
  • Diagnose recurring mechanical problems and identify root causes.
  • Replace worn or damaged mechanical components.
  • Conduct road tests following major repairs.
  • Inspect vehicles before they return to service.
  • Maintain accurate service and repair records.
  • Advise the workshop supervisor on required spare parts and major repairs.
  • Coordinate with hydraulic mechanics and auto electricians on integrated vehicle faults.
  • Maintain tools and workshop equipment.
  • Follow manufacturer specifications and approved repair procedures.
  • Observe workshop safety and environmental requirements.
  • Support emergency breakdown repairs when required.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Certificate or Diploma in Automotive/Mechanical Engineering or Motor Vehicle Mechanics.
  • Substantial experience working on heavy trucks and commercial vehicles.
  • Proven experience in engine maintenance and overhaul.
  • Strong knowledge of drivetrain and heavy-vehicle mechanical systems.

Key Competencies

  • Advanced mechanical diagnostic skills.
  • Strong engine and drivetrain knowledge.
  • Ability to read technical manuals and service information.
  • Excellent troubleshooting and problem-solving abilities.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a workshop team.
  • Strong safety awareness.
