Position Title: Welding and Fabrication Workshop Technician
Employment Type: Contract
Reports To: Workshop Manager
K&G Engineering and Services is a versatile petroleum and engineering company engaged in fuel pump installation and maintenance, tank and tanker fabrication, pipework, civil works, petroleum infrastructure development, and related mechanical services. The company seeks experienced Welding and Fabrication Workshop Technicians to support precision machining, fabrication, and workshop operations while maintaining high standards of quality, safety, and productivity.
2. Position Purpose
The Welding and Fabrication Workshop Technician is responsible for executing precision machining, welding, fabrication, and mechanical repair works in accordance with technical drawings, job specifications, and company standards. The role ensures quality workmanship, timely completion of workshop jobs, optimal equipment use, and adherence to safety and operational procedures.

- Welders and Fabricators
- Workshop Assistants
- Projects and Maintenance Engineer
- Stores and Procurement Officer
4. Key Duties and Responsibilities
4.1 Workshop Operations and Technical Execution
- Execute fabrication, TIG/MIG/Arc welding, machining, fitting, and mechanical repair works.
- Perform lathe operations, milling, grinding, boring, and turning tasks with precision.
- Conduct fault diagnosis and re-engineering of mechanical components.
- Fabricate and repair fuel tanks, tankers, trailers, heavy vehicles, and workshop machinery components.
- Read and interpret mechanical drawings, blueprints, and technical specifications accurately.
- Ensure all works are executed according to approved job profiles and procedures.
4.2 Quality Control and Inspection
- Inspect completed welded structures and machined parts for dimensional accuracy and structural integrity.
- Ensure compliance with quality standards before job sign-off.
- Identify defects and implement corrective measures promptly.
- Document inspection results and repair reports.
4.3 Workshop Planning and Workflow Support
- Support job allocation and ensure timely completion of assigned tasks.
- Assist in planning workloads and meeting delivery timelines.
- Participate in technical evaluation of customer requirements and quotations.
- Ensure proper handover of incomplete tasks at the end of shifts.
4.4 Tools, Equipment, and Asset Management
- Maintain workshop machines and tools in proper working condition.
- Ensure calibration and operational integrity of machine tools (lathe, milling, grinding machines).
- Use appropriate tools and equipment for each job to prevent damage and ensure safety.
- Raise and obtain approval for spares requisition before drawing items from stores.
4.5 Safety, Compliance, and Housekeeping
- Adhere to all health, safety, and environmental regulations.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and hazard-free workshop environment.
- Use appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) at all times.
- Report unsafe conditions, incidents, or equipment faults immediately.
4.6 Documentation and Reporting
- Record material usage, spares consumed, and time spent per job.
- Document repair procedures and completed tasks accurately.
- Provide regular updates to the Workshop Manager on job progress.
- Maintain proper job tracking records.
5. Qualifications, Experience, and Knowledge
5.1 Academic and Professional Qualifications
- Malawi School Certificate of Education (MSCE)
- Welding and Fabrication Grade 1 (NTTC) with TEVETA certification
- OR
- Diploma in Mechanical Engineering or related technical field
5.2 Experience
- Minimum 10 years’ experience in a mechanical workshop environment.
- At least 5 years’ hands-on experience in welding heavy vehicles, tanks, tankers, trailers, or machinery.
- Experience in fuel tank or fuel tanker fabrication is an added advantage.
5.3 Knowledge and Skills
- Strong knowledge of machine tools (lathe, milling, boring, grinding).
- Proficiency in TIG, MIG, and Arc welding techniques.
- Understanding of material properties (steel, cast iron, aluminum).
- Ability to read and interpret technical drawings.
- Knowledge of workshop safety standards and maintenance practices.
- Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.
- Ability to work with minimal supervision.
